Tension as Buhari, Betrays Tinubu With Latest Move

President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu, have both taken different stance on the implementation of the 2014 National Conference Report, with both insisting on their stand point.

Buhari, through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Babachir Lawal, at the weekend, clearly stated that the 2014 National Conference organised by the former President, Goodluck Jonathan, was not a priority of the Buhari administration.


 It would be recalled, that the Jonathan- led Federal Government had assigned responsibilities to 492 delegates from all sections of the country, to discuss thorny national issues, which included resource control, derivation principle, the Land Use Act, national security, among others.

However, at the end of it all, the Conference made some far-reaching recommendations which included; creation of 18 new states, resource control/derivation principle/fiscal federalism, forms of government, public finance/revenue allocation, power sharing allocation, immunity clause and many several others.

 Copies of the report was therefore, submitted to President Buhari, after he emerged victorious at the 2015 general elections While fielding questions from newsmen, the SGF, said Buhari was too busy to study the report of the National Conference and will only focus on key areas of governance, which remains a top priority of the present administration.

“The government has not taken a decision on the 2014 National Conference. I understand that some Nigerians want it implemented, but the government has been too busy with key areas of governance, to talk about an exercise that we thought was essentially diversionary and a sort of, maybe, a job for the boys.

“If you remember, it was reported that almost everybody in the committee got N7 million, and we consider it essentially as job for the boys.

“They probably produced a document that is good and commendable, but I mean, this government is too busy with very more vital areas of governance and we are not intending to spend our time reading reports.
“The exercise of governance is not about reading reports.

The reports are here, so many volumes, that for example, it would take me like seven days to go through and I wonder what happens to my work, while I am reading it; while the economy needs attention, unemployment is there, insecurity is there, people are blowing up pipelines and so on”, he stated.

“If Buhari ignores the call to restructure Nigeria, it will haunt him, as he tackles our lopsided being.

expect the call to increase in its stridency in the coming months. “The National Assembly lacks the courage, or even the depth to push it. This new restructuring fever might be another fight in futility”.
